The Independence Day of India is, naturally, a very important day in the history of the country, and Mayo College Girls School celebrated it with the appropriate amount of pride and enthusiasm. The whole school gathered in the main quadrangle on the morning of 15th August, 2014. The chief guest for the occasion was Miss Sarla Naidu, well known educator at the school level.
First, the school sang Vande Mataram followed by the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana, after which the guest of honour unfurled the national flag. Then, the different house squads, led by the school squad, marched past the Indian flag. The procession was a grand spectacle to behold.
After that, the chief guest made a moving speech about her time in India before it had attained independence, and about the brotherhood amongst the different kinds of people living in India. She also spoke about women and girl rights in India, and the importance of racial and communal equality.
After the ceremony was over, everyone went back to their houses or homes to enjoy the national holiday. It was a memorable day, and instilled everyone, yet again, with the spirit of patriotism and the joy of living in an independent country.
