The MUN Conference at University of California, Los Angeles was held on 8th and 9th of November, 2014.
A delegation of 27 girls accompanied by 2 teacher escorts left for the dream destination on 3rd November from India.
After a layover at Hongkong, we reached SanFrancisco around afternoon. We ate lunch at Chipotle and then checked in a hotel called Ramada.
The next morning after breakfast we went for sightseeing. We saw the famous Golden Gate Bridge, the beautiful Lombard Street and the rustic Sausalito Village. The next morning our city tour began with a ferry ride to Alcatraz Island where the main attraction was the very famous and the most severe prison of bygone days. It was an experience unique in its flavour as we had headsets on, with running commentary giving details of hardcore criminals who were categorized and put in different cells here.
The same day, late in the afternoon we took a stroll in the tranquil Muir Woods where we saw the tallest trees in the world called Redwood Sequios.
The last day in SanFrancisco we went to visit the first University of California called Berkeley. It was a guided tour, as there we were shown around the place by Berkeley University MUN Secretariat. The girls also had an interactive session with them. In the evening we drove through Stanford University and The Silicon Valley.
The following day we were taken to Los Angeles. After lunch we checked in our hotel, Comfort Inn. That day we were taken to a very posh, infact world’s most expensive shopping area called Rodeo Drive and later to a Mexican Street called Olvera Street .
The next place of visit on our itinerary was Santa Monica Beach. From there we went to Dolby Theatre, where Oscars are organized. We also went to Walk of Fame, Beverly Hills and Staples Centre.
Then in the afternoon we visited Warner Brothers Studio. The girls, thoroughly enjoyed guessing the various sets where their favourite English Shows are shot.
The next two days were spent at UCLA where the girls had a first-hand experience of a completely new format of MUNing. It was a great experience and a team of 2 girls namely Radhika Purohit and Sunaina Jacob bagged the Honourable Mention Award in Novice ECOSOC Committee. Shreya Gupta and Anahad Kaur got the Best Position Paper Certificate in GA Plenary. Similarly, Parthvi Singh and Pooja Singh also got the Best Position Paper Certificate in Novice DISEC.
The last 2 days of our stay there, were spent visiting Page Museum, taking the trek to Hollywood Sign, Griffith’s Observatory and watching a very exciting Joust Show called Medieval Times.
The travel arrangements were satisfactory. The stay in different hotels was also comfortable. The food served had a lot of variety, but, the only concern was regarding girls who are strictly vegetarian. We wish that a similar variety of dishes and cuisines could be arranged for them. The tour operator was accommodating and cordial.
All in all it was a fantastic experience and we are extremely grateful to our Principal, Ma’am Kanchan for giving us this golden opportunity.
