Five of our girls took the initiative to apply for Assistant Directorship for the Fifth session of the Harvard Model United Nations, India which took place from the 13th to the 16th of August, 2015 at Hyderabad and we were selected after a vigorous online selection process which included written applications followed by an interview. Rishinandini Kumari Singh was appointed Assistant Director in the Historic Security Council, Shagun Bose in the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, 2001, Parthivee Sharma and Vainee Bhatyal in the United Nations Development program and Radhika Joshi in the United Nations Environmental Program.

The Conference was a valuable learning experience for all of us. It was also our first time on the Executive Board. Working alongside with highly qualified directors from Harvard University, we learned as much from our directors, as we did from all the highly enthusiastic delegates in our respective committees. We also had the opportunity to interact with and learn from the other Assistant Directors, who had come from other parts of India, Singapore, Dubai, Pakistan and the USA. Through this conference we learnt the essence of Model UN: that it is not so much about winning an award as it is about the experience that one takes away from the conference, that in committee, we are not ‘individual’ delegates but a ‘collective’ body hoping to reach a diplomatic solution and that to lead from the front one doesn’t have to be aggressive and dominant but a good listener.
